Paralegal jobs are some of the highly coveted jobs around these days.  So it will be critical for paralegals in the job market to know where to search for these jobs.

Types of Paralegal Jobs

Types of paralegal jobs vary greatly.  When you become a paralegal you open yourself to many options in the job market.  You can look for what are considered to be traditional paralegal jobs and for a law firm or a government agency.  Or, if you are having trouble finding a paralegal job, you can get a number of different types of jobs using some of the same skills.  Here are just a few jobs you can set your sights on:

  • Claims adjuster.  In this position you will gather facts and investigate claims filed by insured individuals.  You will also use your newly acquired administrative skills to draft correspondence and interview witnesses and claimants.
  • Court clerk.  Court clerks receive documents from individuals who have filed lawsuits and file mark them.  These clerks have responsibilities of keeping court files organized.  Court clerks in some places are in the courtroom to call the veniremen and swear in those who are selected for juries.  They also swear in attorneys who sit as special judge.
  • Legal software rep.  Legal software varies from research software like Westlaw to client contact software like Abacus.   Individuals are needed to promote this software.  Additionally, training support is offered with most of these software programs so trainers are needed.  Paralegals with training in legal software have an advantage over other individuals without it; so this is a great fit for those with paralegal training.
  • Probation officer.  Probation officers are responsible for making sure that individuals placed on probation are complying with the terms of their probation.  Most paralegals are good in this position because they have the background in criminal law and criminal justice to fit right in.

Where to look For Paralegal Jobs

Once you’ve decided on one (or more) type of job you want to search for you’ll need to know where to start that search.  Of course, there are many online job boards that can lead you to a job.  These job boards include Indeed.com, Monster.com, and CareerBuilder.com.

Also, don’t overlook the most traditional places to search for jobs…the classified ads of your local newspaper and local job fairs.  If you earned a paralegal degree, your school may have a career placement service that will help you find paralegal jobs.  Additionally, temp agencies often have perfect jobs for paralegals.

Or you can be more aggressive in your search for a paralegal job, hand pick where you would like to work and send resumes to employers you would like to work for.  Be sure to follow up with those employers with a phone call.
